Materials Needed:

Event sheets (download below)

Drinking Straws - for bowling pins

Scrap Paper - for making small cones

Wonderful Wind-up Walkers ($8.95 doz. from OrientalTrading.com)

*Oh no, the Wind-up Walkers are no longer available. Search www.ustoy.com for "wind-up" for some alternatives.

Play-dough or molding clay

Description:

1.  Show an example of a completed bot. Hand out the internal mechanisms and provide many varieties of colored play dough. Note: It is better to provide more colors than large amounts of a few colors. Not much dough is needed.

2.  Ask everyone to check which way the bot walks if they want to ensure that their bot walks forward.

3.  Play some music and let everyone create their bots.

4.  Suggest experimenting with bots to get a feel for how far they will walk.

5.  Describe each event and pass out score cards. Participants must have a witness to validate their score for each event.

6.  (optional) Have the top four scores compete again to find the gold medalist.

Additional Resources:

If you’re feeling ambitious, try making your own play dough. Many other recipes are available online. I chose one that requires no cooking.

Play Dough Recipe

    4 cups flour

    1/4 cup powdered tempera paint

    1/4 cup salt

    1 1/2 cups water

    1 T oil

Mix together flour, powdered paint and salt. Mix water, oil, and food coloring if desired. Gradually stir the water and oil mix into the flour mix. Knead the mix as you add the liquid. Add more water if too stiff, more flour if sticky.

Comments:

I used Play-dough and made an example ahead of time. By the next day it was dried out and didn't look as cool.

Special thanks to Lisa Sarm of the Lincoln Library in Springfield, IL for finding replacements for the discontinued Wind-Up Walkers!
