Hippy Swirls

Materials Needed:

Clear plastic bottles of soda or water (any size)
Food Coloring
Oil (vegetable, canola, whatever is cheapest)
Glitter
Funnel
Sink or bucket of water
Silicon sealer glue
Puff paint
Salt (optional)
Alka-Seltzer (optional)

Description:

1.  If you aren't able to use a kitchen for this program, be sure to have a couple large plastic bins to work from.

2.  I purchased several types of drinks in clear plastic bottles varying in size from 8-16oz. First the teens must empty their bottles, either by drinking or pouring contents into a separate cup. Finally a craft with built-in refreshments!

3.  Fill the bottle about half-way to most-of-the-way with water and add food coloring at will.

4.  Add glitter if desired.

5.  Using a funnel, add oil until bottle is full.

6.  Add some salt and watch what happens. (The salt will sink to the bottom bringing some oil with it. When the salt dissolves, the oil will float back to the top.)

7.  Cut an Alka-Seltzer tablet into eight pieces. Add one of the small pieces and watch the lava-lamp-like action. You may do this several times.

8.  When all bubbling and fizzing has completely stopped, put glue on the threads of the bottle and screw lid tight.

9.  Have plenty of puff paints available to decorate exterior of bottles.
